Have You No Shame, Senator Schumer?
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has introduced legislation designed to codify nationwide access to abortion. Wednesday’s vote is expected to fall far short of the needed votes. A zealot for abortion, Senator Schumer knows he doesn’t have the votes – but said, “This is not an abstract exercise, it’s as real and as urgent as it gets.” What’s urgent, of course, are the thousands of babies being killed each day by abortion. Last week’s leak of an early draft of the Dobbs’ abortion decision has ignited violence and unhinged protests across the country. Mobs have descended on the homes of several Supreme Court justices. Justice Alito and his family had to be evacuated to an undisclosed location. Abortion radicals have firebombed the Wisconsin Family Council and vandalized pregnancy resource centers and numerous churches across the country. The Supreme Court has been surrounded by eight-foot-high metal fencing. The High Court now more closely resembles a high-security prison. Who do you think the government is trying to keep from storming the white marble steps? It’s not the pro-lifers. But here is the great irony and the great shame: Abortion advocates are simply following the lead of the Senate Majority Leader. Back in March of 2020, New York’s Senator Schumer stood in front of that very court and threatened several Supreme Court justices. Before a gaggle of microphones, he shouted: “I want to tell you Gorsuch. I want to tell you Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.” Can you imagine if a pro-life politician made similar threats to abortion-friendly justices? Left-wing hypocrisy is alive and well. Only the Lord knows the date of His return, but as we watch the escalating disregard for life and the scandalous treatment of public officials, I’m reminded of the apostle Paul’s warning to Timothy: “There will be terrible times in the last days,” he wrote. “People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power.” If the leaked decision holds up, we’re on the verge of a watershed moment in our nation’s history and in the pro-life movement. Countless people across time and space have prayed and worked fervently for this coming day all with one goal in mind: saving the lives of the pre-born. At Focus on the Family, we’ve been striving towards this moment for decades. Ministry-sponsored ultrasound machines have helped save nearly a half-million babies. We’ve been providing counseling resources and encouraged birth and adoptive families through the adoption process. This is our pro-life moment. Will we be faithful and meet the need and answer the call? A friend recently reminded me that the debate and battle over life has been raging for thousands of years. In the Didache, an early Christian treatise dating back to the second century, we read the following: “You shall not abort a child or commit infanticide.” Tragically, abortions and infanticide were rampant in the Roman Empire. It seems everything old is new again. Incidentally, some liberal Christians have tried to justify abortion by suggesting Jesus was silent on the issue and that there’s a big difference between a pre-born baby and one who has been born. It’s a deadly lie. In fact, these progressives might be interested to know that in both the Old and New Testaments, the word “brephos” is used to refer to both preborn and born children. That’s because in God’s eyes, a baby is a baby is a baby. Please join me in praying for all the members of the Supreme Court, including those threatened and under attack.
