I am new to this message board, so if this is in the incorrect space please let me know. I am currently in the process of having a new home built, so naturally I want to deck it out with a killer network. I already own and use several products from Ubiquiti, and really the UniFi platform. With that said I'd like to stick with their ecosystem but I'm having a bit of an issue deciding which switch to go with.
My home’s loadout is going to look something like this.
- UniFi UDM Pro (already own)
- UniFi USW Pro 24 PoE OR USW 24 PoE
- UniFi U6LR Access Point (already own)
- 2 x UniFi NanoHD Access Point (already own)
- 1 x UniFi WiFi 6 Mesh Access Point
- 6 x UniFi Switch Flex Mini (to be powered by PoE)
- 4 – 6 x UniFi G3 Flex cameras
- UniFi Doorbell G4
My overall goal is to hardwire pretty much all devices that have ethernet ports (Desktops, Apple TV, PS4, Xbox, ect) and only use the WiFi for phones, tablets and WiFi only devices. I’m going to also have a large amount of smart home gear sprinkled throughout the house as well.
My goal here isn’t to boast or brag, but rather give context to the question I’m about to ask. The decision I am struggling with is should I go with the USW Pro 24 PoE or save money and just get the USW 24 PoE?
My general concerns over the non-Pro model are as follows.
- It only supports up to 95w of power over PoE. Although, I do own an UniFi Switch 8 60w that I can use for some of the PoE devices.
- There are only 1 Gbps SFP+ or 1 Gbps RJ45 connections, supports 26 Gbps of non-blocking throughput and 52 Gbps of total switching capacity. Could this be a bottleneck on a medium sized home network?
- Only supports layer 2 functionality. This means my UDM Pro will be tasked with all layer 3 functions (I.e. IP Lookup for switching), internet firewall (IPS, IDS), and also serve as my NVR. Will this be too much for one unit to do 24/7 on a medium sized network?
The USW Pro 24 PoE solves all of these concerns since it is a layer 3 switch, with 400w of PoE power, 10 Gbps SFP+ ports, and also double the non-blocking throughput and switching capacity. Question is it worth the extra $320 over the non-Pro model and/or does it sound like my network would even need the extra horse-power?
I’m not 100% dead-set on going with UniFi for the switch, but since all of my other gear is UniFi it just makes sense to keep it all on one platform. However, cost is definitely a factor.
I know this is a long post and I appreciate anyone who read it all the way through. Please let me know your thoughts.
