How to Make a Bootable Mojave Drive Downgrade from macOS Catalina?

In case your device runs macOS Catalina but it is causing problems with a few apps, then you may want to downgrade. Or else if you prefer Mojave over Catalina, then you can just go back to the older version. Read on and learn the steps for doing so.

Erase the External Drive for MacBook

  • First of all, connect the USB end portion of the drive to a USB port on the MacBook.
  • Then you should go to the Finder in the Dock to launch a Finder screen.
  • Navigate to the list & select Applications, which is located on the left-hand side of the screen.
  • You have to move down & twice click on Utilities.
  • Thereafter you should go down & click on Disk Utility.
  • Go to the drive beneath External.
  • Later, you have to go to the upper side of the screen & select the Erase option.
  • Now, you should write down the external drive name because you will require it when you make a bootable drive.
  • If the MacBook is using HFS+, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) through the format list. 
  • If the MacBook is using APFS, choose APFS through the format list.
  • When the scheme is available, choose GUID Partition Map.
  • Then click on Erase option.
  • When the process is finished, click on Done.
  • Now, exit the Disk Utility screen.

Make the External Drive Bootable for Installing macOS Mojave

  • Get started by going to the Dock & select the Finder to launch the Finder screen.
  • Navigate to the list which is located from the left-hand side of the screen & choose Applications.
  • Then you have to move down & twice click on Utilities.
  • You should go down & twice click on the Terminal option.
  • Remember the formatted external drive name when you go with the text into Terminal. If it is untitled, you will require to modify the ā€œcommand syntaxā€ for the pathname wherever it says: Volumes/Untitled.
  • After that you should go with the text into Terminal.
  • Later, press the Enter/Return key.
  • Now, you have to input the administrator account password. This password will use to make modification on the MacBook or sign in. 
  • When you input the password, any text will not come in Terminal.
  • Now, enter Y to verify that you would like to format the drive & hit on return key.

Using macOS Mojave as an Installer Boot Drive 

If you want to use macOS Mojave as an installer boot drive, then you need to follow the instructions given below.

  • To get started, shut down the MacBook you would like to install macOS Mojave with the bootable drive.
  • Then you should plug in the external drive to the MacBook through the USB port.
  • You have to turn on the MacBook.
  • Later, press & hold the Option key.
  • Now, choose the external drive with macOS Mojave on it through the list of systems to boot up the computer.
