Implementation of Hospital Information Systems in Rainbow Children’s hospital

First Iteration: Pre-implementation

Planning

In today’s world, businesses and other organizations are increasingly turning to solve their problems through technology such as mobile apps, Web apps, and cloud computing among others. Through the technology, they have been able to gain a competitive advantage because of the huge impacts major system implementations have on the organizations. However, before implementing such systems, such organizations conduct a pre-implementation review. Pre-implementation varies depending on the type of system under implementation, the platform on which the system is processed such as whether it is outsourced or processed in house, and the business process the system supports.

Before the implementation of the HIS at Rainbow Children’s Hospital, I will be needed to have a comprehensive understanding of the hospital vision as well as the goals and objectives. This will enable me to understand the position the hospital would like to be in the future. At the same the actions that can get the hospital to the defined level of the vision should be understood so as to be able to configure the information system that facilitates the actions for the success of the hospital. Most of these actions will not be possible without having to consult all the people concerned with the welfare of the Rainbow Children’s Hospital. As such, none is strategically placed to answer all my questions regarding the hospital better than the hospital management. Therefore, I will outline some questions that will enable me to capture most of the things I will be interested in. Additionally, I will search on the hospital website to familiarize with some of the things I will come across during the activities.

Action

The HIS system could not have been implemented at Rainbow Children’s Hospital without good planning and a wide consultation with the hospital’s management. Additionally, where possible, I will look for ways to gather all the information I required without necessarily approaching the management. Therefore, I did an Internet search to see how the hospital was preparing for the future and where it would like to be. On the technological front, the hospital would like to embrace any technological invention that will propel it in the next level. Additionally, the hospital would like to be popular and famous in the next decade owing to the embracing of the technological advancements. Therefore, by the implementation of such systems as HIS, the hospital will have achieved one something meaningful thereby placing it on the right track towards achieving the vision, goals, and objectives.

I followed the Internet search with consultation with the hospital management. However, I had to book the appointment which was duly granted because of the need for the hospital to have an immediate implementation of the HIS system. Before the actual day, I prepared a set of questions which I would pose to the management regarding the hospital’s vision, goals, and objectives. On that very day, I had a sitting with the Rainbow Children’s Hospital management. We had a lengthy discussion which was more like an interview. The management expressed their hope that the HIS system would help them achieve their goals and objectives. Additionally, the management outlined the hospital’s vision which the system was supposed to see it is achieved. We discussed the state of the existing system at the hospital and how it was not in line with the hospital’s vision, goals, and objectives.

Observation

According to what I observed, the management was in dire need of the implementation of the HIS system at Rainbow Children’s Hospital. The existing system was also not in line with what the hospital would have liked to achieve by the turn of the decade. Additionally, the current system would not help the hospital achieve some its goals and objectives. Therefore, the hospital management would be happy with the replacement of the existing system at whatever cost without worry. Among other observations are that the existing system would not be replaced without proper planning. Although the system was not playing a big role in the achievement of the hospital’s vision, goals, and objectives, it was important at that moment since the new system was not readily implemented.

I observed the organization of the hospital and their desire to be on the frontline in embracing all the modern technologies such as HIS system. However, the need for the current technology at the organization had been necessitated by how the business world was rapidly moving technologically. Therefore, organizations which played blind to the current state of the technology would forever remain back and within touching distance of extinction. I observed that such an important system as HIS system cannot without having a comprehensive pre-implementation. Pre-implementation enables the system developers to have a clear understanding of the environment on which the system will be installed. Therefore, it was only good to conduct a pre-implementation at Rainbow Children’s Hospital before implementing the HIS system. Finally, HIS is one of the most important systems that hospitals should implement and without which hospitals will lag behind forever.

Reflection

When I look back at what I did, I have nothing more than a desire for it. The process of pre-implementation was successful according to me as a researcher and according to the management of the hospital. It would probably not have been done in a better way than how I did it. Additionally, it was a learning process for both parties. The hospital management learned so much about HIS system which would not have been possible without having to conduct the pre-implementation process. The meeting we held with the hospital management was one of the highlights of the process. The outcomes were exactly what we had expected. I had looked forward to having a session where I would interact with the management one-on-one trying to convince them about the implementation of the HIS system. What came out was the achievement of my desire.

I learned so much about the Rainbow Children’s Hospital. Before the pre-implementation process, I had never known that a system is implemented according to the vision, goals, and objectives of an organization. However, on successful conduction of the pre-implementation, I learned that the implementation should align to the organization’s vision, goals, and objectives. Therefore, it gave me knowledge and concepts about system implementation that would serve me for the rest of my career. Although the pre-implementation success is a general observation, I have a feeling that the process would have enjoyed more success and enable me to learn more if we had more time on our hands. The time allocated, especially in the meeting with the hospital’s management was not enough. However, it was a compliment from what I had searched from the hospital’s website.
