Using motivation to improve performance
There are several factors determining the level of motivation of the staff whether it is positive or negative. Motivation tends to be a powerful tool that does reinforce behavior and also triggers the tendency to continue. Employee performance depends on various factors including motivation. Employee motivation does influence a particular degree in the organizational performance. Dobre (2013) claims that a motivated employee usually has his or her goals aligned with those of the organization. Work motivation closely links with the overall performance of the workers. A well-motivated employee is more likely to feel more satisfied. In helping improve employee involvement, the three most critical factors include leadership style, organization climate, and reward system.
Reward system
Organizations realize that they must establish an equitable balance between the employee contribution of the organization and the contribution of the organization to the employee. There are different approaches for creating the balance through a reward system that includes benefits, compensations, and recognitions (Pratheepkanth, 2011). A major focus of recognition is making employees feel valued and appreciated. Using a reward system tend to be an essential tool that management may use in channeling employee motivation. The reward system aims at attracting people to join the organization to keep coming to work and also motivate them to perform at high levels. Intrinsically motivate employees are committed to their work to the extent the job contains tasks that are rewarding them. The extrinsically motivated employees are committed to the extent they gain or receive external rewards for their job.
Leadership style
Leadership is a social influence process essential for the attainment of organizational and societal goals. Leaders do understand that they do have the power and they understand the source of their power. The position, expertise, ability to reward and the personal appeal of the leader tend to be an important factor in motivating employees. The quality of the relationship of the manager with an employee is a powerful element of employee motivation (Chowdhury & Gopal 2014). It does create positive, respectful, and professional attitude and employees are more likely to adopt the same approach with their peers. The leadership style that the organization adopts and its management do have a determining impact on motivation level, job satisfaction, and morale of employees.
The leadership style is the major factor that determines how people feel about the organization and how motivated they are (Chowdhury & Gopal 2014). Changing a leader tend to change the psychological climate of the company and the whole performance of people in the organization. As a leader, it is important to understand the requirements, needs, and expectations of employees and generate the appropriate work environment to motivate employees. For all the responsibilities of a leader, motivating employees is considered as the most complex task. There are different leadership styles. Democratic leadership is a style that encourages employee’s participation and feedback. Through development and training, leaders tend to create effective teams that do not require close supervision. The leadership style used by the management may affect the effectiveness of the employee input (Chowdhury & Gopal 2014). Democratic leaders accept the input from employees, and they use the information available to them to improve the work process. An employee who feels motivated and is confident with the vision of the company can be productive. The leadership style tends to have a direct influence on employee morale.
Organization climate
The management normally creates and maintains the organization climate. It consists of the way people treat each other up and down the line. The organization climate tends to be an essential factor that directly impacts the organization performance of employees. The climate of the organization is normally determined by the top management or the leadership of the organization. A work environment that does illustrate that each employee is valued and makes a good contribution to the organization through utilizing the talent to its potential. Motivation is highly rooted in need of maximizing achievement and minimizing failure (Dobre, 2013). Creating a good organization climate involved developing an environment where employees appreciate working. An organization can manage to create a good work environment through ensuring respect for people at every level of the organization. Employees feel motivated when they are working in a workplace where they feel respected and not insulted by other people. Treating employees badly and mostly those people under authority can highly affect their productivity.
Improving the work climate tend to be the responsibility of all managers who do oversee employees on a daily basis. Managers can be able to produce better results if they strive at improving the work climate. What the manager of a group does tend to be an essential determinant of climate. The behavior of the boss tends to drive the climate that does arouse motivation. According to Dobre (2013), an aroused motivation is a key driver of the bottom-line performance. It is possible for organizations to sustain the performance improvement through creating a climate that develops, motivates, and retains the talented people.
Implementation
Improving the employee involvement in the organization requires the introduction of reward system, good leadership style, and creating a good work environment. The organization should consider developing a good reward plan on how they can be rewarding employees in the business. Including intrinsic and extrinsic motivation can help to improve the employee involvement. Some motivation factors that may be considered include money, promotions, bonuses, recognition, and incentives. Creating a good organizational climate may involve ensuring that employees feel respected in the organization. Providing the necessary resources to help employees complete their work also act as a motivating factor that helps employees improve their performance. The leadership style adopted in the organization can help to improve employee performance through motivation. In this case, it is essential that the management should consider a leadership style that does encourage employee development and also involve them in the process of decision making. Developing a sense of employee involvement in the decisions of the organization is very effective in improving performance.
