Saudi Arabia is one of the nations whose government has for long denied the citizens the freedom expression through media. However, the recent decades have marked the big move where the government has allowed the influence of the social media to reach and capture every aspect of its functioning.  According to Sandoval (2014), today, the TV, radio, the newspapers as well, as other means of media coverage have earned their way to activation. Apparently, today, these mediums of news coverage are today governed while the government owns others.

Today, the government has issued it a basic law that the media has the free role to educate, to inspire and to inform the citizens (Alotham, 2013). In Saudi Arabia, the media plays the above roles through educating the masses of the government’s plans, inspiring national unity and reporting the grievances of the citizens to the government.  Alothman (2013) reports that there is no way a nation can exist without corruption or misdemeanor of the government if the media is not given the chance to elaborate what goes on in the government to the citizenry. As such, the government of Saudi Arabia is today marked one of the governments that has employed media incorporation (Sandoval, 2014).

Apparently, Saudi’s population or citizenry has a high rate of smartphone ownership. According to Cross (2014), the country has more than half of all active Twitter users in the Arab region. YouTube users and other elementary mediums that support social media have heavily earned their popularity in the country starting with the members of the royal family.  The young Saudis are also increasingly relying on social media for furthering their education, express themselves and also for entertainment themselves (Cross, 2014). To the adults, social media is also used as a means of earning money and connecting friends (Adi, 2014).
