Reflecting on Personal Identity and Global Citizenship

The world today is becoming increasingly interconnected. Individuals are gaining exposure to global cultures giving them an opportunity to develop their global identities. Developing this identity is only possible through educating others on what comprises global citizenship. Educating on global citizens is all about defining awareness, embracing cultural diversity and caring for people from different cultures from our own. Thus, the education promotes sustainability and social justice and people will at with a sense of responsibility towards one another. Being aware of how our cultures have interconnection and the embedded in setting that values global citizenship will lead to the greater identification of becoming global citizens.

Research and theory also suggest that if the global citizenship is salient, there will be greater identification relating to group’s content adherence. These include the prosaically behaviors and values. Results from these studies have shown that interconnected with others and knowledge in global awareness, and one’s normative environment predicts the identification with global citizenship and global citizens. The knowledge also predicts the pro-social values relating to intergroup empathy, social justice, valuing diversity, intergroup helping, environmental sustainability and acting responsibly towards the betterment of this world.

Global citizenship and environment influences

Intergroup empathy involves the feeling of concern and connection for individual outside one’s in-group. It is all about the attitude towards people of different cultural background from my own. Valuing diversity is the interest and appreciation of diverse cultures. Social justice means equitable treatment of others and endorsing human rights. Environment sustainability involves the connection to and concern for the natural environment. Intergroup Helping is about the desire to assists other people from outside my in-group. Finally responsibility to act involves feeling the duty in ways that will better the world. The environment I live in has an influence on these factors because cultures do impact on an individual’s attitudes and mental growth. The environment forms what known as the intentional world is the meaning field socio-cultural settings. The setting is constructed and influenced by prior generations and also influenced by individuals who inhabit this environment. Since cultures shape people and people also play a role in shaping their culture.

The two aspects intrinsically link and form a dialectical relationship. Thus, the intentional world/ environment has cultural patterns from the previous generation’s inheritance. The environment we live in also forms the subjectivity of reality experience. The intentional world shapes and directs human experiences. Finally humans actively repress, facilitate and transform the aspects of culture that forms our environment or the intentional world. Thus, by overcoming the barriers set forth by the intentional world, we become global citizens. It is possible to attain global citizenship by increasing the levels of cultural and global awareness as a vital template t o explains individual’s evolution of undertaking a global perspective. This knowledge starts by being aware that people differ in their worldviews or that aspects have shaped other people’s views towards the world we do not know. Understanding the differences we have will then help us gain greater and factual knowledge about the world. In turn, the knowledge helps gain greater cross-cultural awareness and the ability to empathize with individuals outside our in-group. Finally, we gain better understanding of the global dynamics and their underlying systems (Reysen, & Katzarska-Miller, 2012).

Personal examples

As school teachers, one of my main career goals is to develop greater understanding of student’s diverse ways to learn and establish a repertoire for instructional approaches. As a global learner, I believe that the current day civilization is embracing a new age of learning through the use of technology that has enabled us overcome the geographical and socio-economic barriers. Therefore, it is essential that I implement, and education grounded on the approach to global citizenship. This approach will enable learners from various cultures and learning abilities to come together and establish a conscious community based on social justice and with an intergroup empathy.

When I first joined the University, I was amazed to find new people who were not American citizens like me. I started forming friends with other students from Asian origin, sub-Saharan Africa, and northern Europe. By interacting and understanding their worldviews, through intergroup empathy, I overcame the stereotypical misconceptions I previously had. I started to be interested in their different cultures and to understand their world views. Thus, I have managed to improve my intercultural competencies through the collaborative approach of interaction with people outside my in-group.

General education courses

My general educational course has enabled me become gain an opportunity to reflect upon diverse perspectives and worldviews. I have managed to conduct an inquiry into issues that are vital in helping me live in the current interdependent and connected world. Through this course, I have enriched my awareness on the importance of global issues and the ethos of concern towards other people outside my in-group. I have also gained better understanding of my capacities in contributing towards being a member of my national, global and local community. As an active democratic citizen, I will widen my circle of empathy so as to generate a sense of humanity towards all people. I will accept and recognize collective responsibility for continued social and economic well-being by preserving the planet’s environmental integrity. Thus, through this course I have developed ecological literacy that has helped me understand the connection of competencies as a citizen. It has empowered me gain a sense of my personal efficacy in addressing the challenges that face humanity in the present day.

Through this learning process, I have managed to shift from the ‘me’ sense to the ‘we’ sense, from detachment to engagement, and from passive to active. I have remained social and personal values and factors that can impact on my decision making. I have also recognized the collective human responsibility for the well-being of the present and future generation and my personal contributions to the betterment of the future. I have gained a much deeper understanding of interdependence, global issues and the need to encourage one another in addressing societal issues. I have learned that global citizenship is a way of thinking and personal choice. Being a global citizen will help me experience other people, cultures, and countries firsthand.

I believe that by practicing citizenship competencies I will work and envision a much better future to humanity. I will develop the ethos of being an engaged citizen who recognizes the ecological principle importance for they address issues of economic sustainability, social justice and quality of life to humanity.
